319-Leona/Betelgeuse – Occultazione 2023

Il 12 dicembre 2023 si verificherà una interessantissima occultazione di Betelgeuse (una delle stelle più brillanti del cielo) da parte dell’asteroide 319 Leona. Numerose sono le motivazioni per osservare questo fenomeno, diamo qui le principali:

• Betelgeuse è una stella di prima grandezza e, se verrà totalmente occultata, scomparirà letteralmente dal cielo per una manciata di secondi rendendo monca la costellazione di Orione. Già questo la renderà un evento spettacolare e, soprattutto, fruibile anche da un pubblico di curiosi e interessati al cielo che potranno assistere ad un fenomeno rarissimo e che ben difficilmente si ripete nel corso della vita umana.
• Betelgeuse, però, è anche una stella supergigante rossa e la sua relativa vicinanza alla terra (circa 600 anni luce) farà si che, in una osservazione dove entra in gioco anche il parametro
  tempo (l’occultazione non sarà istantanea come accade invece per una stella qualsiasi), che in quella occasione gli osservatori potranno condurre esperimenti per ricavare il diametro
  della stella, la composizione attraverso gli spettri, e altre interessanti osservazioni di valore scientifico. Addirittura l’occultazione potrebbe essere di tipo “anulare” in quanto le misure sinora compiute lasciano un margine di incertezza sulla effettiva totale sovrapposizione del pianetino al disco della stella. In questo caso non si assisterà alla scomparsa di Betelgeuse ma soltanto ad una attenuazione del suo splendore della durata di qualche secondo. Per chi non voglia compiere misure scientifiche un binocolo aiuterà moltissimo nell’apprezzare il fenomeno in tutta la sua unicità.

Vale la pena di segnalare che negli ultimi due/tre anni Betelgeuse è diminuita notevolmente di luminosità per poi tornare a risalire ai suoi normali valori: gli studiosi spiegano che probabilmente la stella, che si trova nelle ultime fasi della sua vita, ha espulso una grossa quantità di materiale che la ha oscurata sino a quando la nube creata da questo materiale non si lentamente dispersa nello spazio. Betelgeuse è anche una stella probabilmente candidata ad esplodere come supernova. Non sappiamo se il momento è prossimo o manca ancora qualche migliaia/decina di migliaia di anni.
Quel che è certo è che il botto, se ci saranno ancora degli essere umani sulla Terra in grado di osservarlo, sarà impressionante.
L’area di osservabilità dell’occultazione, in Europa, attraversa la Spagna, l’Italia meridionale e la Grecia (vedasi la mappa pubblicata che comprende tutta l’Europa).
In Italia AstroCampania, con il patrocinio della IOTA-ES, si occuperà di organizzare e coordinare le osservazioni e le location per tutti gli osservatori, italiani, europei ed internazionali che vorranno venire nel Bel-Paese per tentare con successo l’osservazione del fenomeno.

AstroCampania quindi provvederà per ognuno, tenuto eventualmente conto delle particolari esigenze legate ai programmi osservativi che il singolo intende svolgere, a trovare per i giorni 11/12 dicembre l’accomodamento, il vitto e a far si che in loco siano a disposizione tutte le attrezzature, escluse quelle astronomiche personali, che rendono positivo il risultato di una osservazione.

Pertanto ogni singolo osservatore non dovrà preoccuparsi di prenotare in quanto, in base alle richieste da compilare nel form di prenotazione da inviarsi poi via email all’indirizzo
alfaori2023@astrocampania.it , AstroCampania provvederà ad individuare la location e a comunicare all’osservatore la propria postazione.

Il giorno dopo l’occultazione ci si sposterà tutti ad Agerola (provincia di Napoli) dove AstroCampania gestisce l’Osservatorio Astronomico Salvatore Di Giacomo e dove verrà organizzato un convegno che permetterà di confrontare i primi risultati ottenuti.

In queste pagine troverete quindi le indicazioni generali per effettuare l’osservazione di una occultazione. Ricordiamo che non viene occultata solo Betelgeuse ma, durante ogni anno ci sono decine di fenomeni da poter osservare, certo non tutti spettacolari come quello del prossimo 12 dicembre.

On December 12, 2023 there will be a very interesting occultation of Betelgeuse (one of the brightest stars in the sky by asteroid 319 Leona.There are numerous reasons for observing this phenomenon, here are the main ones:

• Betelgeuse is a star of the first magnitude and, if totally hidden, it will literally disappear
  from the sky for a handful of seconds, making the Orion constellation crippled. This in itself will make it a spectacular event and, above all, usable also by an audience of curious and interested in the sky who will be able to witness a very rare phenomenon that hardly repeats
  itself in the course of human life.
• Betelgeuse, however, is also a red supergiant star and its relative proximity to the earth (about 600 light years) will mean that, in an observation where the time parameter also comes into play (the occultation will not be instantaneous as happens for any star), that on that occasion the observers will be able to conduct experiments to obtain the diameter of the star, the composition through the spectra, and other interesting observations of scientific value. Even the occultation could be of the “annular” type since the measurements carried out so far leave a margin of uncertainty on the effective total overlap of the planetary planet
  with the disk of the star. In this case we will not witness the disappearance of Betelgeuse but only an attenuation of its splendor lasting a few seconds. For those who do not want to carry out scientific measurements, binoculars will help greatly in appreciating the phenomenon in all its uniqueness.

It is worth pointing out that in the last two/three years Betelgeuse has decreased considerably in brightness and then returned to its normal values: the scholars explain that probably the star, which is in the last stages of its life, has expelled a large amount of material that obscured it until the cloud created by this material slowly dispersed into space. Betelgeuse is also a likely candidate star to explode as a supernova. We don’t know if the moment is near or still a few thousand/ten thousand
years away. What is certain is that the bang, if there are still humans on Earth able to observe it, will be impressive.
The observability area of ​​the occultation, in Europe, crosses Spain, southern Italy and Greece (see the published map which includes all of Europe).
In Italy AstroCampania, under the patronage of IOTA-ES, will take care of organizing and coordinating the observations and locations for all Italian, European and international observers who want to come to the Bel-Country to successfully attempt the observation of the phenomenon.

AstroCampania will therefore provide for everyone, possibly taking into account the particular needs related to the observing programs that the individual intends to carry out, to find accommodation, meals and to ensure that all the equipment is available on site for 11/12 December excluding personal astronomical ones, which make the result of an observation positive.

Therefore each individual observer will not have to worry about booking as, based on the requests to be filled in the booking form to be sent via email to the address alfaori2023@astrocampania.it, AstroCampania will identify the location and notify the observer of their location.

The day after the occultation we will all move to Agerola (province of Naples) where AstroCampania manages the Salvatore Di Giacomo Astronomical Observatory and where a conference will be organized which will allow us to compare the first results obtained.

phenomena to be observed, certainly not all as spectacular as the one on December 12th.
